Waikato Multicultural Day becomes special fete

HAMILTON: Spectators enjoyed the real feel of multicultural performances at the Waikato Multicultural Day celebrated at Hamilton. The Waikato Multicultural Day is a regular feature to recognize, as well as celebrate the diverse cultures.

With an objective to celebrate cultural diversity and promote integration amongst all ethnic communities in Waikato region, Waikato Multicultural Council (WMCC) hosted “Waikato Multicultural Day”.

Hamilton Deputy Mayor Martin Gallagher was chief guest on the occasion and MP Tim Macindoe also attended the event.

The festival included performances by a Traditional Chinses group dance performed by Hamilton Chinese Learning Centre, K Pop by Waikato Korean School, “Kalinka Malinka” by Russian Friendship Society, Plysvaya “Rusting evening” by Znanie Russian School and Bharatnatyam by Hamilton Kerala Samajam. And ofcoure, no function is complete without Bhangra on beats of drums. Hamilton Punjabi Sports and Cultural Club presented a marvellous performance of Punjabi folk dance Bhangra.

WMCC President Ravinder Powar said, “The aim of celebrating multicultural day is to encourage support and cooperation among the ethnic groups, to improve awareness and understanding of ethnic philosophies, and share these with the wider New Zealand community.”
