Another Punjab farmer commits suicide

JAGRAON: A debt-ridden farmer allegedly ended his life by jumping into a village pond late Saturday night.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning when some villagers spotted his body floating in the pond. The deceased was Avtar Singh (67) of Rauwal village near Sidhwan Bet. He is survived by his wife and three children, all of whom are married.

The police have begun proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC after registering a case at the Sidhwan Bet police station.

The body was handed over to his family after the postmortem. Villagers said Avtar owned six acres and he was under a debt of Rs10 lakh.

“We have been facing financial crunch. The demonetisation further increased our woes. My father could not even return the bank limit because of the shortage of funds. He was under stress due to which he took the extreme step,” said Baldev Singh, son of the deceased.
